PPP Loan Update
We are hearing reports that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) may run out later this month, well before the May 31 application deadline. If you are interested in obtaining a forgivable first or second draw PPP loan but haven’t yet applied, please apply with your lender as soon as possible. For more information on how to apply for a PPP loan, please refer to C.A.R.’s Small Business Loan FAQs for brokers here.
Market Update
The market sentiment is drastically different today compared to a year ago at the onset of the pandemic. With the U.S. economy positioned to grow at the fastest pace since the early 1980’s and mortgage rates trending down again in the past week, REALTORS® are feeling more optimistic about the upcoming home buying season. Many expect sales to remain solid as prices continue to grow, while more supply will be added to the market in the coming weeks. Consumers are also more positive about the housing market than they were 12 months ago, as more of them believe housing is a good investment now relative to before the COVID-19 outbreak.

Legislative Update
AB 946 (Lee). This bill would eliminate the mortgage interest deduction on second homes in California. C.A.R. opposed this bill and it was supposed to have been heard in the Assembly Revenue and Tax Committee yesterday but was pulled from the Committee by the Author. There are a variety of reasons for a bill to get pulled, but generally it does suggest there was concern about getting it through the Committee in its current form. The bill may come back in its current form or amended in such a way where the Author thinks its odds of passage are better, but regardless this was a good sign for us and we will continue to keep lobbying the bill and the key contacts will also be active. For more, read our weekly report here.
