Key Read of the Week
“Thelma Waxman, president of the Brentwood Homeowners Assn., whose 1,200 members own about 4,000 properties, said it had been a stressful time for members, and for residents living near high-risk fire zones. Losing State Farm coverage “is the No. 1 topic of discussion” among association members, she said. “Everybody is nervous.” Read the full LA Times article here.
Market Update
With the jobs report coming in stronger than expected for the third month in a row, a soft landing in 2024 is looking more and more likely for the economy. A decent growth rate in economic activity, however, is also keeping inflation elevated and delaying the Federal Reserve’s rate-cut movements. As such, Wall Street has adjusted its expectations on the number of cuts accordingly, which might have resulted in the most recent rate increases. Despite the change in expectations, futures contracts continue to point to a 50-75 basis-point (bps) decline in policy rate this year, which is consistent with what C.A.R. projected in its latest forecast.

Legislative Update
California Primaries. In this episode, C.A.R.’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, Sanjay Wagle, is joined by political experts Joshua Walters, President and CEO of Walters Strategies, and Rob Stutzman, founder and president of Stutzman Public Affairs, to discuss the impact of the recent primary election and what to expect in November.
Rob and Josh join Sanjay in discussing the impact of the low voter turnout in the March Primary Election, the surprises, and what they predict will be the top issues on voters’ minds in November. Rob said, “I continue to think this is a cost-of-living election that translates into energy prices, particularly in California, and you see a lot of panic beginning to set in with the Legislature; they see electricity prices skyrocket…I think that’s something they’re really going to be trying to address.”
They also discuss the upcoming statewide ballot measures as well as how this election will impact state policies for years to come, with nearly one-fourth of the Legislature expected to turnover in November.
